History of the Energy Business Area

The history of the Energy Business Area of Evonik not only goes back a long way, but is also full of interesting technical and economic facts. The story begins with the establishment of Steinkohlen-Elektrizität AG (STEAG) in the 1930s, which originally ran just two strategically important industrial power plants, and ends with today’s modern energy corporation that operates numerous major coal-fueled power plants and maintains important business activities in the sectors of district heating, renewable energy, and international power plant engineering.

When we look at the history of energy within Evonik Industries, we realize how closely the company was - and continues to be - connected to the regional and economic history of western Germany’s industrial zones. The company has always taken on new technical challenges, for example, in its efforts to keep the air clean, and it continues these efforts successfully to this day.
